All the time is still spent sleeping and eating. The time spent sleeping is growing day by day allowing mom Othilia to have some rest. She is still spending all the time in the whelping box constantly nursing (the puppies still needed moms help to relieve at the beginning of the week) and watching the 3 little puppies, including having an eye on the door to the kitchen when opened – making sure none of the other dogs come into the kitchen. 4-legged visitors are still not allowed :)

The puppies ears are slowly opening. During the week we noticed the first very small signs of the puppies being able to hear sounds. So besides the “classic” kitchen sounds we couldn’t resist to have extra focus on playing classical music this week knowing the scientific effects on animals. And being Italian Sighthounds it off course had to be Italian composers primarily :)

During the few minutes they are awake at a time they also train to come up on all 4 legs. And because they only can be awake for a short while they also still sleep with the characteristic contractions in legs and body. This in order to train their muscles.
The little treasures opened their eyes during the week. The boy at day 15, grey girl at day 17 and black girl at day 20.

The eyes have opened but it will take weeks for them to be able to see properly, but the process of developing their sight has begun.
With eyes and ears on their way we have also started to see interaction with their mom, between them and with us. It feels so fantastic when we for the first time feel “recognized” by the little new lives.

They still spend all the time in the whelping box, but when changing the blankets they are transferred to another and softer bed. And to us there is no doubt – they simply love soft blankets/bedding by instinct! It is not something they learn to appreciate when they grow older – we think it must be an inherited breed characteristic :) the reason we do not have the softest blankets in the whelping box at this age is because of danger of the pups getting caught under a blanket and Othilia laying on it so a puppy cannot come out.
