M-litter - 1 week old

Jazettas two little princes have now turned 1 week old and both concentrate on their first priority in life: to gain weight! They have both doubled their weight one week old :) They eat, sleep, eat, sleep, eat…… just like it is supposed to be at this age :o)

To be able to follow the development and that the puppies are doing fine, they are weighed daily. Here one of the boys is seen being weighed – and because the milk bar is not around, he sleeps away the weight-session :o)

Jazetta still wants to be together with her puppies all the time and the little family is only disturbed when it is necessary. At this age all the puppies need is only their mothers attention and human handling kept at a minimum. E.g. when the litter box has to be cleaned. But, those moments are so precious to us – to be allowed to handle and to be close to the puppies are such a life-affirming experience.

Jazetta keeps an eye on the puppies all the time (also while we clean the welping box) and makes sure they are doing fine. The boys certainly do not lack their mothers attention :o) Here the little family have curled up on our lap while the welping box is cleaned.

The puppies are born totally helpless. They can´t see or hear, and they even need their mother´s help to relieve themselves. At 1 week old the puppies still have no vision or hearing, but the senses are under full development. Eyes will open at day 14-16 and the hearing a little later.

The majority of time the puppies are sleeping. At this age they sleep with the characteristic small muscle contractions and often seen with their mouth a little open and using their tongue as if they where drinking milk – or even better with a nipple in their mouth as if it was a pacifier :o)  All dreams seems to be focused around "drinking milk" :o)

At this age we have also seen the very first small signs of interaction between the two puppies (besides piling up together when they sleep):
